The City of Boerne has been awarded by AIA to receive a RUDAT, it has been more than 10 years since a Texas city has been selected for this honor.

When will RUDAT take place?
The Boerne RUDAT will begin Wednesday June 4 and conclude with a public presentation Monday June 9, 2008. Log onto rudatboerne. com for dates or watch the local papers for announcements.

Why do we need it?
Boerne is experiencing substantial growth and change and is at a critical crossroads in its history. A RUDAT can assist Boerne in identifying its unique qualities and characteristics and aid in developing a vision that is compatible with its heritage. This visioning allows for growth and redevelopment that responds to change and can produce both short-term and long-term bene ts for citizens, property owners, business owners and tourists alike.

How does it work?
A totally volunteer "Dream Team" of nationally recognized leaders in architecture, planning, economic development will meet for an intense ve-day workshop to gather community input that will lay the foundation for creating a vision and recommendations for Boerne's CIVIC CAMPUS, CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT, and CIBOLO CREEK.

What are the RUDAT project areas?

CIVIC CAMPUS: 15.5 acres on North Main Street, east of St. Helena's Episcopal Church. Site of future Boerne Library.

CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT: Downtown Boerne extending from Oak Park north to Frederick Street.

CIBOLO CREEK: Main Plaza to River Road Park

What are the benefits?

• Transparent community participation in the city planning process.

• Objective look at the community with "Fresh Eyes."

• A candid and realistic summary of existing conditions.

• New levels of communication, collaboration, commitment, cooperation and consensus within the community.

What is the process?
The RUDAT Team will spend two days gathering community input from citizens in a town-hall meeting and from speci c focus groups. The Team will spend the following two days developing a nal report with recommendations for the community. Soon after the RUDAT, an Implementation Team consisting of local citizens will be assembled to move forward with the recommendations of the RUDAT report. A year after the RUDAT, a follow-up visit by members of the RUDAT Team will result in a report card that analyzes the action plan, assesses progress and makes recommendations to aid further implementation.

What will be the end result?
A community vision for the future of downtown Boerne in the form of a professional report, based on public input, that is well-illustrated with conceptual plans and sketches, published and distributed to the community before the RUDAT Team departs. This report will be used to develop an action plan and timetable to implement the recommendation of the report.
